“Great Stories” Theme & Garden Design Competition
This year, all eleven spectacular gardens will be designed to the theme “Great Stories”. Each of our wonderful designers will interpret that theme and incorporate it into their design.
The gardens will be competing in three categories – Peer Vote, where one lucky landscape designer will win the Golden Shovel for impressing their fellow designers, Professional Vote, where local designers and professionals will judge the designs based on several criteria, and a Public Vote, which is where YOU come in!
Vote for your favorite design at the show for your chance to win a one year membership to Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park!
Bakhuyzen Landscape Management
Bakhuyzen Landscape Management relives Charlotte’s Web, the great children’s novel by American author E. B. White. The red barn takes you to the farm where Wilbur and his friendship with a barn spider named Charlotte is formed. Be sure to keep your eyes open for one of the famous webs. Incorporating this farm setting, with some modern landscape materials, show how you can make a cozy setting anywhere. From the planters, farm table, pavers and water feature, a classic children’s story from 1952 was melded into the 21st century.
Essex Outdoor Design
Designing and Building the settings for your Lifestory. Using tons of stone, hundreds of plants, thousands of books, millions of pages and a whole lot of heart. We are each our own collection of stories. Why not build something with it! Quiet places, and gathering spaces to write the next chapter in your Story-line
Everett’s Landscape Management, Inc.
The Panama Canal
We will create an Everett’s rendition of The Panama Canal, inspiring memories one of the greatest undertakings ever by mankind on this earth! The Atlantic and Pacific Oceans will be connected in Central America, significantly reducing the effort previously taken by ships having to travel around the bottom of South America! Many people lost their lives during this project but will forever be appreciated.
Harder & Warner Nursery & Garden Center
A Landscape is Worth 1000 Words
For the 2018 Home and Garden show, Harder and Warner showcases new age garden features and takes you on a wonderful journey with enchanted forest flair. Remarkable stories come to life from every angle, with the main event being our unique fire, water and natural stone elements. A special reading nook will stand front and center with a space for kids of all ages to curl up with a book and will host scheduled readings from Harder and Warner’s finest. While showcasing our abilities and talents from a design/build standpoint, we aim to inspire the dreamers looking for the perfect outdoor space to enjoy at their home.
Heyboer Landscape Maintenance, Inc.
The Oak and the Reed
The intent of the garden is to showcase the chaos of a fallen tree in a landscape. As told by the classic Aesop Fable. Design also includes ample patio space and walkways.

There’s No Place Like Home (Wizard of Oz)
When you take a walk with us through our booth, you’ll find yourself in a magical land on your way to Emerald City. Along the path of the Yellow Brick Road, the colorful landscape will draw you in and direct you to the Wizard of Oz. You’ll be reminded of the friendships made and be excited to make new ones; always remembering that there’s no place like home.

KCTC Sustainable Agriscience’s Hansel and Gretel
This year, we chose Hansel and Gretel as it is a recognizable, familiar folk tale that’s been told and retold for hundreds of years. The story of Hansel and Gretel begins leading you along a trail of breadcrumbs, deep into a wood, where the children lose their trail and become lost. The story is further incorporated into the garden using the contrast between the candy house being carefully constructed and landscaped, with the forest around it being wild, overshadowing, and dense. Special thanks to our culinary program for the house.
Wizard of Oz
The story we chose for our garden is the Wizard of Oz. Our design has incorporated this story with traditional landscape elements. We have recreated the yellow brick road as the hardscape in a traditional patio area and have the characters featured as well.

The Promise Land (Story of Moses)
I picked this story because it allows us to implement many different items that homeowners want in their own backyard paradise or “Promised Land”. We will be showcasing water in two different ways. We will be incorporating trees and shrubs and engravings that tie in with the story . We will also be using natural stone and low voltage lighting in several ways to help tell the story.
The Neverland Garden (Peter Pan)
The idea for this garden is based on Neverland from the story of Peter Pan. I designed the space to resemble places you may find in Neverland, large tree house, skull rock, cascading waterfalls….The focus of the design make you feel like a kid again, and to promote imagination in design, showcasing our abilities and vision at Outside Inc.

The Great Escape
In today’s busy world being able to get a real Escape is hard to find. Escaping to your own backyard to pick up one of those old great stories is within reach. Relax and escape in your mind to other parts of the world and places in time with your feet up and no traveling. Rain or shine there’s a place for that great escape.
Rosemont Nursery Inc.

See how each home was crafted using base material selected by each home owner. Don’t linger to long, there is a storm a brewing. The Wonderful World of Dr. Seuss
”The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” This is one of my favorite quotes from Dr. Seuss. His stories have allowed me to go to many places over the years. Recently I have had the privilege to revisit his stories and places once again, but this time I had the wonderful company of my son. This garden is an homage to the zany characters, the bright and vibrant illustrations, and the incredible journey Dr. Seuss’ stories have taken us on!
